Youth Found Dead After False Allegations of Taking Ashes
A teenage boy was found dead only a few days after being falsely accused of taking the cremated remains of a deceased baby during a burglary, an inquest has learned.
Heartbreaking Finding
Kai Lloyd's mother and father found his remains in his bedroom at his Connah's Quay residence on November 19th, 2021.
Untrue Accusations Start
The investigation learned how his mother received a communication on November 8th, 2021 via social media, from a individual asking if Kai was her child. The communication stated: "Inform him appreciation for burgling my flat."
In a statement read to the court, the mother said the woman had been in the media, asserting her baby's ashes had been stolen in a burglary - a claim which was false.
Law Enforcement Inquiry
An official inquiry from authorities later determined the alleged burglary complainant had "provided false information" and "evidence shows that the property was not taken in the beginning".
News coverage about the alleged taken ashes generated social media responses, and although the teenager was not identified in the posts, his parent said individuals "understood it was him".
The "social media content were extremely distressing", she stated.
Emotional Health Impact
She added that Kai had been diagnosed with mild ADHD, and as part of that disorder, other individuals' views genuinely were important to him.
"This must have affected him severely," she said, "especially when this was not true".
The teenager was detained at his residence, but nothing was discovered. He was transported to a law enforcement facility and later freed pending further inquiry.
Police said they would be in contact, the hearing learned, but had not contacted the relatives by the time of his death.
Withdrawal and Worry
His parent said her son "withdrew into himself" after the arrest and "would keep asking me whether I had heard anything from the police", because his condition meant sometimes "certain periods could feel like much longer".
When she talked to him about the alleged incident, she said her child informed her he had entered the residence because the resident who resided there had said he could use the bathroom anytime he wanted, but denied removing anything.
Digital Bullying
In a joint statement between her and her husband, the mother said her son was being harassed digitally after the allegations.
The proceedings heard that a 19-year-old urged Kai to end his life.
She had no worries on the night before he passed away, explaining how she had listened to him "chuckling and teasing".
She portrayed him as a "compassionate, loving" young man, and said her "family is totally shattered".
He had been "clearly concealing his concerns", she said, adding that he could not stand to have anyone "have negative thoughts of him".
School Response
The inquest received testimony from educational personnel at the local High School.
On 8 November, she "heard some students talking that the student had been detained and that was the first I learned".
"He informed me... he'd done nothing wrong," she added.
After the discussion, the staff member said she rang Kai's family telephone and left a voicemail saying she had communicated to the student about the allegations.
The proceedings heard his family said they never receive that communication.
Official Finding
Senior investigator told the hearing he would wait for reports regarding what improvements had been made to handling suspects with the condition, before deciding whether he should make a prevention of future deaths report.
Providing a descriptive finding, he said: "Around 8 November 2021, unsupported accusations were made against the teenager, a young individual.
"Likely falsehoods were subsequently embellished and amplified through the platform of social media.
"During November 11th, he was interviewed by the police and following his questioning he was freed whilst inquiries proceeded."
The official determined: "There is no evidence that the actions or omissions of any organization led to or contributed to his death and although it was the result of a self-inflicted act it is impossible to determine his intent."
