Right-leaning responses to the partial disclosure of files related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some supporters of the previous administration highlighting the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in images, while others lamented how heavy censorship cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable manner.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Fervent Rhetoric
Administration officials defended the redactions with intense exaggerated language. “At no point in U.S. the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this transparent with the public about such a sensitive legal matter,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page memo describing the censorship process.
Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's identity and likeness appear in portions of the documents, the widespread redactions raise serious concerns about what may be hidden behind them. Some conservative lawmakers swiftly demanded increased openness.
“The public are raging and walking away,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the law, and implied that a future legislature may attempt to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, this file dump grossly fails to comply with both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he continued.
A Faction of Rightwing Commentators Swing In Support of the Disclosure
But, some conservative pundits and former President loyalists swung firmly behind the administration.
The release—from a DOJ run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of documents that are completely redacted, and many of the individuals shown in photographs have their faces blacked out.
But a few are not, including prominent individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, in particular, allowed certain conservative figures to launch the offensive.
“It’s quite rich how the Democrats wrongly claimed President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 explanation Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Clinton Campaign Issues Statement
Bill Clinton has consistently stated he knew of no illegal activity by Epstein and has not been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House has not been concealing those documents for months only to release them late on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from what they’ll try and conceal forever. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photographs as they desire, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement concluded.
Overall Rightwing Comment Seems Subdued
However, overall comment on the political right was comparatively subdued after the disclosure, particularly when juxtaposed against the loud demands for action that preceded the legislative approval to enact a bill mandating the files' publication.
The commentator, who recently secured media access at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest advocates for a complete release. Earlier this year, she criticized the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing personalities were provided hard-copy binders of files that contained little new information.
